Multiple currencies and exchange rates

Every transaction keeps its own currency. Totals convert at the rate of each transaction's day, and FullFi tells you when a total is incomplete instead of guessing.

Original amounts stay as they are

Each account has one currency, and each transaction keeps the amount and currency it happened in. A −42.00 EUR dinner stays −42.00 EUR in the ledger. FullFi converts only when it builds a total in your workspace's base currency, which you choose when you create the workspace.

Which rate a total uses

FullFi uses the newest rate on or before the day it needs:

  • Income and spending convert each transaction at the rate in effect on its own date. Adding a newer rate doesn't change last month's report.
  • Net worth and balances convert at the rate in effect on the day you're looking at.

Rates are only ever added, never edited. When you record a rate for a day, reports from that day on use it, and earlier ones don't move.

Rates you enter and rates FullFi fetches

You can record a rate or a price by hand on the Exchange rates page in Settings. A crypto asset is priced in a regular currency, such as 1 ETH = 3,412.50 CAD.

FullFi can also fetch them for you, if this server has the feeds set up and you turn them on under Fetched rates and prices in Settings:

  • Exchange rates: European Central Bank reference rates, through Frankfurter. On weekends and holidays, the previous business day's rate applies.
  • Crypto prices: one price a day from CoinGecko, in your base currency, up to a year back.

A request to these services names only currency or asset codes and dates, never an amount or anything about you. A fetched rate is stored once and never changes. When you've entered a rate by hand for the same day, yours wins. Each rate shows where it came from ("entered by hand", "ECB reference rate via Frankfurter", or "CoinGecko daily price") and, for fetched ones, how confident FullFi is in it.

When a rate is missing

FullFi never assumes 1 to 1. When a transaction has no rate to your base currency on or before its date, it's left out of the total and the total is marked Incomplete, with the currencies it leaves out. Open a category to see which transactions are missing a rate. "Needs attention" lists every currency that needs one. Add a rate, or fetch the missing ones, and the total is complete again.

What isn't supported yet

A transfer between two accounts in different currencies isn't supported yet: FullFi only offers transfers between accounts in the same currency.
